PETROFEST-IG

Petrofest: Music, Magic & Millennia at PAAR This July!

Abril, Faia, Maruxa e Coralia DJs and the magic of Samuel Moreno make up the lineup for this festival of small-format shows, right on the ground, without stages, stretching from morning till dusk, designed for all audiences.

The Parque Arqueolóxico da Arte Rupestre (PAAR), located in Campo Lameiro – Pontevedra, will transform into a true cultural ‘romaría’ (traditional Galician festive gathering) next Saturday, 26th July, with the celebration of the first edition of Petrofest. This daytime festival will offer a unique and free day of music, dance and magic in the heart of nature, among ancient petroglyphs, oaks and pine trees.

Entry to the site and the festival will be free and open, with no prior booking required, except for the guided tours that will take place throughout the day and do require registration. The event promises an unforgettable experience where heritage, culture and fun intertwine.

The gates of the PAAR will open at 11:00h, marking the start of a varied programme designed for all audiences:

  • 12:00h – “Danza entre petróglifos”: An introduction to traditional Galician dance with María Montero. With extensive experience in Cantigas e Agarimos, she is also a regular member of the cast of Fran Sieira’s dance company. She will offer an introduction to traditional dance, ideal for practicing later during Abril’s concert.
  • 13:00h – Concert by Abril: In a clearing of the forest, next to the labyrinth in the PAAR’s Archaeological Area, the duo comprising Claudia Abril (vocals and percussion) and Marina Carpente (violin and vocals) will offer a contemporary folk proposal. Traditional Galician and Iberian melodies are adapted to current sounds with intimacy, personality and freshness, creating a folkloric microcosm where identities converge and build community.
  • 14:00h – DJ Set by Maruxa e Coralia DJs: Paula and Tamara, under the name Maruxa e Coralia – a tribute to Santiago de Compostela’s iconic ‘Duas Marías’ – will make the PAAR vibrate with their selection of Galician music. Their fresh and alternative set will blend genres like rock, cumbia, electronic, pop and trap.
  • 16:00h to 18:00h – Rock Art Games: Fun activities for all ages, designed to help you learn about the era of the petroglyphs through play.
  • 18:00h – Magic with Samuel Moreno: The young Galician magician, a semi-finalist on Spain’s Got Talent, will amaze visitors with a modern, fresh and youthful show.
  • 20:00h – Concert by Faia: The ‘romaría’ will culminate in an intimate and very special concert at the iconic Laxe dos Carballos. Faia Díaz, accompanied by Bleuenn Le Friec on harp, will reinterpret Galician folklore melodies in a relaxed atmosphere, as the sun sets over the great engraved deer, a spot famously used by Carlos Núñez in his ‘Magical Places’ concert series. Faia, recognised with the Premio Martín Códax da Música 2025 for Best Traditional Music Project for her work ‘Alvela’, will offer a performance blending roots sounds with sound experimentation.

Complementary Activities and Services:

Throughout the day, attendees can also enjoy other PAAR offerings:

  • Guided Tours of the petroglyphs: There will be tours at 12:00h, 17:30h and 19:00h. These tours, the only activities requiring prior booking and ticket purchase via paar.es, will allow visitors to gain an in-depth understanding of the most significant petroglyphs, the period in which they were created, and their enigmatic meanings.
  • Cantina Rupestre: Available throughout the festival for traditional country-style meals and drinks.

Petrofest in Campo Lameiro promises an exceptional day to connect with Galician history, nature and culture through music, dance and magic, all within a unique European heritage setting.

Outdoor Prehistory Experiences at the Archaeological Park of Rock Art

Night visits, sunsets, games, and experiences to immerse yourself in prehistory complete the program.

The PAAR will also host for the first time the Petrofest music festival and the 1st International Conference on Atlantic Rock Art.

The Archaeological Park of Rock Art (PAAR), located in Campo Lameiro (Pontevedra), is one of the best places to experience prehistory in Galicia this summer. Its July, August, and September program will combine different experiences to travel back to the Bronze Age, including rock painting, hunting, pottery, and even the chance to be an archaeologist for a day.

As a major new feature, there will be a special visit during the “magic hour”: Sunset at the PAAR. This guided tour takes place at the best time to view the petroglyphs as the sun sets. It features a longer route than usual, ending at the special viewpoint of Outeiro das Ventaniñas.

Another perfect time to contemplate some of Galicia’s most important ancient engravings is during Nights at the PAAR. Every Friday, you can stroll under the moonlight and stars, listening to legends and enjoying special lighting that highlights every detail of the rock art.

For families, two games are available for a fun day out:

Petroaventura is an outdoor orientation game that lets you explore the park’s trails while discovering its history and curiosities, helping you become a true petroglyph protector. This activity is designed for families and friends.

For aspiring detectives, the most mysterious family escape room, “The Treasure of the Moura,” will also be available. This clue-based game takes place inside the interpretation center, challenging your puzzle-solving skills.

Special Event Each Month

For the first time, the Archaeological Park of Rock Art’s summer program will feature a major event each month: a music festival, a prehistoric reenactment festival, and a scientific conference.

Petrofest will fill the PAAR’s petroglyphs with music on July 26. This daytime festival will feature performances by Abril, Faia, Maruxa y Coralia Djs, and the magic of Samuel Moreno. There will also be a “rupestre” canteen, workshops, and more activities to be revealed.

On August 24, it will be time to return to the Bronze Age thanks to Laeros, the Rock Art Festival, organized by the Campo Lameiro City Council in collaboration with the Xunta de Galicia. Expect gastronomy, prehistoric reenactments, and many new features to be announced soon.

Finally, on September 20 and 21, the first International Conference on Atlantic Rock Art will take place. This is an opportunity to highlight the significant heritage of Galicia’s petroglyphs at a European level and their astonishing connections with other engravings in Ireland and Scotland. Researchers from both Galicia and abroad will participate, with special visits and activities.

Extended Hours

Starting July 1, the PAAR will extend its hours to open Tuesday to Sunday from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM. All information and activity reservations can be made through its official website, paar.es.

New investments in the PAAR to improve its infrastructure.

During his visit to Campo Lameiro, José López Campos, the Galician Minister of Culture, Language, and Youth, confirmed that the Xunta (Galician government) will invest approximately 240,000 euros in improvements to the Archaeological Park of Rock Art (PAAR). This investment aims to further conserve, promote, and disseminate the millennia-old legacy of the petroglyphs. These actions include a study on the conservation of the Park’s sites, as well as maintenance work on its architectural infrastructure.

López Campos emphasised the ‘shared responsibility and task’ of both the Administration and society in caring for this heritage, considering it ‘one of the greatest treasures that form Galicia’s cultural identity.’ He made these remarks during his inaugural visit as the head of this Xunta department to the Archaeological Park of Rock Art. Specifically, López Campos highlighted that this archaeological area was one of the eight heritage sites featured in the 2023 campaign ‘For Many More,’ through which the Galician Government sought to raise public awareness about the importance of conserving and preserving our heritage. He also noted that this initiative continues this year with the new slogan ‘Let Our History Continue to Tell Its Tale.’

López Campos stressed that through such campaigns, the Galician Government intends to assert ‘the immense value it holds in shaping our history and identity for current and future generations.’ He specifically mentioned the objectives of ‘fostering public awareness, promoting knowledge about these assets, and encouraging best practices and preservation initiatives that allow one of Galicia’s greatest treasures to be passed on to future generations in the best possible condition.
